07/12/2010 Albert Heijn shoppers to scan items with smartphone
Ahold’s Dutch supermarket operation Albert Heijn has launched a new version of their smartphone application Appie, enhancing the service with a scanning feature. Shoppers using an iPhone or Android phone can now scan barcodes from products in the Albert Heijn range and add these to a shopping list which is automatically sorted according to the store layout. Additionally, the application provides 9,000 recipes with ingredients that can be added to the shopping list when selected by the customer. Appie also has a store finder function.

The application was first released in November 2009. The new scanning function will enable a multitude of additional customer services for the future, Albert Heijn told Planet Retail. The application will be further extended with the ability to provide detailed product and price information and enable mobile users to shop conveniently from the Albert Heijn online shop. The release of these features has not yet been scheduled. The retailer is asking for feedback from users who may suggest which functions they next want to have at their fingertips.
